Tokaj Wine Region

The Tokaj Wine Region is one of the most important regions, not only in the Southern Zemplín. The special region of the Slovak Tokaj is an organic part of the historic Tokaj piedmont wine region. With its area of almost 1,000 ha, it is one of the smallest vineyard areas both, in Slovakia and abroad. However, thanks to its quality, uniqueness, and rarity it is one of the best known.

The Tokaj Region is one of few regions in the world where the grown grapes are able to ensure the production of naturally sweet wine.

The current Tokaj Wine Road is no longer a trade route, and it only connects individual villages, cellars, and wine producers. These all are the places where wine-loving visitors can taste and, most importantly, learn about this golden beverage.

You cannot come to visit cellars whenever you wish. This is the area where wine tourism in Slovakia has a long way to go. However, if you order such a visit in advance, you will be welcomed.

You may as well ask our hotel personnel to do so and, if interested, we will be happy to arrange such a visit of Tokaj wine cellars for you.

Once a year, however, you can taste the Tokaj wine from local wine producers without any need to book in advance. This region started to organise Wine Cellar Open Days after the fashion of the Little Carpathian Wine Road. The time is always the same, the last weekend in September when the cellars are open to everyone who buys a ticket.

Based on the tradition, the Tokaj Cellar Open Days are organised by local wine producers and visitors may taste their wine. Each wine tasting is connected with a presentation of individual kinds of wine by a wine master. To that connected are traditional craft markets, performances of traditional music ensembles, traditional potato pancakes and half-fermented young wine.
